Book Illustration: People with Learning Disabilities Looking for a Partner

Digital Illustration

Brief Description:

How people in institutional living arrangements experience the search for a partner. Everyone has the right to live their sexuality and relationships in a self-determined way.

But how does one find a partner when living in an institution?

Federica Hofer explores this question in her publication. She examines the dating experiences of people with learning disabilities living in institutional housing. In narrative interviews, four individuals with learning disabilities share their experiences of searching for a partner in an institutional context. The interviewees discuss their desires and expectations regarding relationships, the opportunities available to find a partner, the support they receive, and the challenges they encounter. The interviews reveal that self-determined sexuality depends on the institutional conditions – despite the rights being enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In her analysis, Federica Hofer shows where the problems lie in the implementation and offers.
